Good news to the students from the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohort who are unhappy with their university placement or missed the latest KUCCPS transfer window – there are still options.
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has clarified that students who sat the 2025 KCSE examination remain eligible to seek an inter institutional transfer in 2026 and/or 2027, even if they missed the recently closed transfer window.
The clarification comes after students raised concerns about what would happen after the 2026 inter institutional transfer exercise closed.
KUCCPS had opened the transfer window for students placed in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, with the deadline set for August 14, 2026. The exercise covered eligible students from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 KCSE cohorts.
Can 2025 KCSE Students Still Transfer After the KUCCPS Portal Closes?
Yes, according to the placement agency, sitting the 2025 KCSE examination does not make a student ineligible simply because they missed the current transfer window.
Students from the 2025 KCSE cohort can seek an inter institutional transfer during an eligible transfer cycle in 2026 and/or 2027.
This means students who have already reported to their assigned universities, or those preparing to join, should not assume that missing the current deadline means they have permanently lost the opportunity to change institutions.
However, students must wait for KUCCPS to announce the next applicable transfer window and should follow the official instructions when the system opens.
What Is a KUCCPS Inter-Institutional Transfer?
An inter institutional transfer allows a student who has been placed through KUCCPS to request a move from the institution where they were placed to another university or college.
For example, a student placed at one university may request to transfer to another institution offering the programme they want, provided they meet the applicable requirements and the receiving institution has capacity.
KUCCPS states that an inter institutional transfer is available to successful applicants and that the transfer processing fee is KSh1,000.
Importantly, a student can only request an inter institutional transfer once. KUCCPS also says that processing can take up to 14 working days once the application has gone through the required process.
Students should therefore avoid rushing into a transfer simply because they are unhappy with their initial placement. It is important to first check the available programmes, entry requirements, costs, location and other factors before submitting a transfer request.
What Students Should Check Before Applying for a Transfer
Being eligible to request a transfer does not automatically mean that a student will be accepted into their preferred university or programme.
The student must meet the requirements for the programme they are seeking to join. For degree programmes, this includes meeting the applicable cut off requirements for the placement year, while the receiving institution must also have capacity for the programme.
Students should therefore check the programme requirements on the KUCCPS Student Portal before making a decision.
The transfer process involves the receiving institution considering the application before it proceeds through the required approval stages. Students should also keep track of their application through the KUCCPS portal and wait for official confirmation before treating a transfer as complete.
A student should not simply stop attending the institution where they were placed because they have submitted a transfer request. Until the transfer has been approved and the necessary documentation issued, the original placement remains important.
What If You Want to Change Your Course Instead?
Changing institutions and changing programmes are not necessarily the same thing. While KUCCPS handles inter institutional transfers, changes of programme within an institution may be subject to the university’s own rules and procedures.
A student who has already joined a university and wants to move to another course should therefore first consult the university’s admissions office or registrar to establish whether an internal programme change is possible.
The student should also confirm that they meet the academic requirements for the new programme.
