A smartwatch can tell you the time and count your steps, but what if it could also tell you that you did not sleep particularly well, your body may need a lighter workout today, or you are doing better with your fitness than you think? That is what the latest Samsung Galaxy Watch9 is trying to do.

It wants to help you understand your sleep, track your fitness, keep an eye on your health patterns and even make some everyday tasks easier with AI.

So what exactly does the Galaxy Watch9 do, and what makes it different?

A familiar design with some thoughtful changes

Samsung has kept the familiar round Galaxy Watch design, but the Watch9 is slimmer and designed to sit more comfortably on the wrist. It comes in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with the smaller model available in Cream and Graphite, while the larger version comes in Silver and Graphite.

The watch has a sapphire crystal display and can reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness, making it easier to see outdoors.

There is also a Dynamic Lug System designed to keep the watch and its sensors closer to your wrist. That is particularly useful because many of the Watch9’s health features depend on getting consistent readings from the sensors.

Health tracking is at the heart of the Watch9

The Galaxy Watch9’s BioActive Sensor tracks a range of health information, while the watch uses that data to give you a broader picture of what is happening with your body.

One of the headline addition features is Vitals, which monitors five key measurements while you sleep: heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, skin temperature and blood oxygen.

After building a personal baseline from your sleep data, Vitals can flag changes that fall outside your usual range. It is not intended to diagnose a medical condition, but it can give you more information about your normal patterns and when something seems different.

The Watch9 also offers a Heart Health Score, which looks at factors including sleep, body composition and vigorous activity to provide a broader picture of your heart health.

There is also blood pressure tracking, although the watch needs to be calibrated using a separate blood pressure cuff before you can use the feature.

Sleep is treated as part of your health, not an afterthought

The Galaxy Watch9 takes sleep tracking beyond simply telling you how long you slept. It looks at your sleep patterns and habits, while Sleep Coaching uses that information to provide personalised guidance over a three to four-week programme.

Then there is Energy Score, which uses recent sleep and activity data to give you an idea of your daily readiness.

So, if you wake up feeling like you could either conquer the world or barely make it to breakfast, the watch can give you another data point to consider before deciding whether today’s workout should be a run or something gentler.

For people who actually want to get fitter

The Watch9 is about more than just counting steps. Its new Fitness Index brings together information such as VO2 Max, body composition, heart rate, steps and activity data to give you a broader picture of your fitness.

For runners, there is also Running Coach, which creates a personalised three to five week training programme based on your ability and goals. The watch can guide you through workouts and help you understand when to push harder and when it might be time to recover.

There is also Daily Cardio Load, which looks at changes in your physical strain to help you balance training and recovery. Essentially, the Watch9 is trying to become less of a passive fitness tracker and more of a coach sitting quietly on your wrist.

And then there is Gemini

AI is becoming a bigger part of Samsung’s devices, and the Galaxy Watch9 is no exception. Google Gemini lets you use your voice to ask questions, organise tasks and access information across compatible apps.

That could be useful when your phone is buried in your bag, your hands are occupied or you simply don’t want to stop what you’re doing to type something out.

It is a small but significant shift in how we interact with a smartwatch. Instead of tapping through tiny menus, you can simply speak to it.

More battery for more tracking

Battery life matters even more when you are using a smartwatch to track your sleep overnight. The Galaxy Watch9 comes with a 390mAh battery in the 40mm model and a 445mAh battery in the 44mm model.

The larger battery on the 44mm model is useful if you want a bigger display and more battery capacity, while the 40mm version makes more sense if you prefer a smaller watch.

The Watch9 also runs on the Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform, designed to deliver faster and smoother performance.

So, which Galaxy Watch9 should you get?

The choice between the two sizes is fairly straightforward.

The 40mm Galaxy Watch9 is the smaller option and comes in Cream and Graphite whike the 44mm version gives you a larger watch and battery, and comes in Silver and Graphite.

The core experience remains the same, so your decision really comes down to the size you prefer and whether you want the larger battery.

What makes the Galaxy Watch9 different?

There are plenty of smartwatches that can count your steps, track workouts and show notifications. The Galaxy Watch9, however, is trying to make all those individual features work together.

Your sleep can contribute to your Energy Score, your activity contributes to your fitness picture, your health data can help establish your usual patterns and AI can turn some of that information into more useful guidance.

That is what makes the Galaxy Watch9 interesting – the fact that it is trying to become a small, always with you companion for understanding your health, improving your fitness and managing some of the everyday things that usually send you reaching for your phone.
