Thousands of students in Kenya’s public universities are expected to resume learning on Monday, November 2, following the end of a nationwide lecturers’ strike that disrupted academic activities for nearly a month.

The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) announced on Friday, October 30, that it had signed a Return-to-Work Formula with the government and the Inter-Public Universities Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF), bringing the industrial action to an end.

In a statement, UASU Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga directed union members to resume teaching and other academic duties on November 2. The union also invited students to return to their studies immediately.

The strike, which began on October 2, affected teaching, research and other academic activities across public universities, leaving thousands of students uncertain about their academic calendars, examinations and graduation timelines.

Why Were University Lecturers on Strike?

The industrial action followed disagreements between university staff unions and the government over the implementation of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs).

The unions, including UASU, the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), had raised concerns over salary adjustments, allowances and outstanding employment related commitments.

Negotiations between the unions, university employers and the government had stalled, with the unions rejecting earlier proposals on the funding required to implement the agreements.

The dispute eventually led to the withdrawal of teaching and other services, disrupting learning in public universities.

What Ended the Lecturers’ Strike?

The breakthrough came after the government committed KSh20 billion towards implementing the 2025–2029 CBAs.

The funding will be released in three instalments over three financial years:

  • 2026/2027: KSh6.7 billion
  • 2027/2028: KSh6.7 billion
  • 2028/2029: KSh6.6 billion

The agreement provides for salary adjustments and improvements to allowances for university staff.

It also addresses outstanding salary and allowance arrears, while providing safeguards against victimisation of employees who participated in the industrial action.

Following the signing of the Return-to-Work Formula, UASU confirmed that its members would resume their duties on November 2.

When Should University Students Report Back to Class?

Students in affected public universities have been asked to resume their studies immediately, with Monday, November 2, marking the official return-to-work date for lecturers.

However, reporting arrangements may differ between institutions.

For instance, the Technical University of Kenya has notified students that lectures and other academic activities will resume on November 2, with students required to report to their respective departments and attend classes according to the scheduled timetable.

The university has also indicated that a revised academic calendar will be published to guide students on the new academic dates.

Students should therefore check official communication from their respective universities for specific reporting instructions, revised timetables and any changes to registration requirements.

Will the Strike Affect University Examinations and Graduation Dates?

One of the immediate challenges facing universities is recovering the learning time lost during the industrial action.

With teaching disrupted for nearly four weeks, institutions will need to review their academic calendars and determine how to complete the remaining coursework.

This could involve rescheduling lectures, practical sessions, continuous assessment tests and examinations.

Some universities may also have to adjust graduation dates, particularly where students were expected to complete their final semesters before the strike.

However, there is no single revised academic calendar applicable to all public universities. Each institution will have to communicate its own arrangements.

Students awaiting examinations or graduation should therefore rely on notices from their university’s administration rather than assume that previously announced dates remain unchanged.

The end of the lecturers’ strike brings some relief to students who have spent weeks away from normal academic activities. However, returning to class is only the first step towards restoring the academic calendar.

Universities must now work out how to recover missed teaching time while ensuring that students complete their courses and meet the required academic standards.

The implementation of the KSh20 billion agreement will also be important in maintaining industrial harmony and preventing further disruption.

For students, the immediate priority is to check their university’s official communication, confirm reporting arrangements and prepare for the resumption of academic activities.
