How Long Does CRB Take to Update Your Status After Loan Repayment in Kenya?

Samsung - A new way to enjoy your home

So you have finally paid off that loan, cleared the outstanding balance and received your payment confirmation. Now, you expect your Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) status to change but days later, when you check your credit report, the loan is still showing as outstanding.

How long does it actually take for CRB to update your status after loan repayment in Kenya?

The answer depends partly on the institution that gave you the loan and how quickly it submits updated information to the Credit Reference Bureau. While some lenders process updates within a few working days, others operate on scheduled reporting cycles.

According to Creditinfo Kenya, a financial institution may take up to three working days to report a cleared loan. The bureau then takes approximately another two to three working days to reflect the updated status.

But because these timelines are not a universal guarantee, understanding how the reporting process works can help you know if you should wait, if you should contact your lender and, what to do if your credit report continues to show an outstanding balance.

How long does it take for CRB to update after repayment?

Creditinfo Kenya provides a general guide of up to three working days for the financial institution to report a cleared loan, followed by approximately two to three working days for Creditinfo to update the account. In a straightforward case, this means the update could take approximately five to six working days.

However, the actual waiting period may differ depending on the lender’s reporting arrangements and when the repayment information is submitted.

Creditinfo also explains that institutions may update customer information within 24 hours, 48 hours, at the end of the week or monthly, depending on their internal policies.

For banks that provide daily updates, repayment information is typically sent to the bureau two to three days after payment. Updates received by the bureau are generally reflected by the end of the day, although information received after 3:30 pm may be applied by 10 am on the next working day.

Why does CRB take time to update your loan repayment?

When you repay a loan, the transaction does not automatically change the information already held by a Credit Reference Bureau. The stages involved include;

1. The lender confirms your payment

The financial institution first needs to receive and process your payment. It must establish that the outstanding amount has been fully settled and that no contractual balance remains.

For example, if you repay a mobile loan through M-Pesa, receiving a payment confirmation SMS does not necessarily mean that the lender has already updated your credit information as the transaction may need to be reconciled against your loan account before the institution can report the new position.

2. The lender submits the updated information

Once the loan has been confirmed as settled, the lender updates the relevant credit information and submits it to the CRB, an important stage because the bureau relies on information supplied by financial institutions and other approved credit information providers.

Therefore, the financial institution is the party responsible for updating both positive and negative credit listings.

3. The CRB processes the update

After receiving the information, the bureau processes the submission and updates the relevant credit record.

If everything is in order, the outstanding balance should change to reflect the settlement. But if the submission contains incorrect details or there is a discrepancy between the information supplied and the existing record, further investigation may be necessary.

What does Kenyan law say about CRB updates after repayment?

Kenya’s Banking (Credit Reference Bureau) Regulations, 2020, provide a framework for how credit information is collected, shared and updated.

Under the regulations, institutions and approved third party credit information providers are required to update relevant information immediately when a change occurs.

Credit Reference Bureaus, in turn, are required to update their databases within two days of receiving the updated information.

The bureau’s two-day update requirement relates to when it receives the information, not necessarily the day you make your final loan payment. That means if your lender has not yet submitted the repayment information, the bureau may have nothing new to process.

If you experience a delay, the bureau shouldn’t be the first institution to contact, but the lender.

What if your CRB status has not changed after five a week?

If you have fully repaid your loan and your CRB report still shows an outstanding balance after the general processing period, it is reasonable to start following up. The next probable step is establishing where the update is stuck.

1. Contact your lender first

Get in touch with the bank, mobile lender, SACCO or financial institution that issued the loan and ask whether the loan has been marked as fully settled in its internal records, and whether the updated information has been submitted to the relevant CRB.

Be specific about what you want confirmed. Simply asking whether your loan has been cleared may not establish whether the credit information has also been updated.

2. Request proof that the update was submitted

Creditinfo Kenya explains that financial institutions generate a unique identification code known as a batch number when submitting customer updates.

You can ask your lender whether an update has been submitted and whether it can provide the relevant batch number.

This gives you something more concrete to refer to when following up instead of repeatedly asking whether your CRB status has changed.

3. Obtain your latest credit report

Check your credit report to establish whether the loan still appears as outstanding or whether its status has changed to settled.

Pay attention to the lender’s name, outstanding balance and the status of the credit facility.

You may also discover that another loan or credit facility is responsible for a negative listing. Remember that repaying one loan does not automatically settle other outstanding accounts.

4. Request an update or correction

If the lender confirms that the loan has been settled but the report remains inaccurate, request that it submit the necessary correction to the bureau.

Provide your payment confirmation, loan settlement letter and any other relevant documents.

5. File a formal dispute if the problem persists

If the lender does not resolve the issue, you can lodge a formal dispute with the relevant CRB.

Explain what information is incorrect and provide supporting evidence. The bureau can then contact the institution that supplied the disputed information to investigate.

Under the CRB regulations, borrowers have rights to challenge inaccurate information contained in their credit reports.

If the issue remains unresolved, you can consider escalating the complaint to the Central Bank of Kenya.

Will my negative CRB listing disappear once the repayment is updated?

No, not necessarily. This is where many borrowers misunderstand the difference between settling a loan and clearing their credit history.

When you repay a defaulted loan, the relevant account should be updated to reflect that the outstanding amount has been settled.

However, the historical record of the default may remain in your credit report for the applicable retention period.

Kenya’s Banking (Credit Reference Bureau) Regulations, 2020, generally provide for non-performing loan information to be retained for five years from the date the amount in default is finally settled.

Therefore, if you repay a loan that previously resulted in a negative listing, you may still see the historical information even after the outstanding balance has been corrected.

What matters is that the report accurately reflects your current position.

Does checking your CRB status affect your credit score?

Checking your own credit report is different from applying for another loan.

Creditinfo Kenya explains that a personal inquiry into your credit history is a soft inquiry and does not affect your credit score.

A lender checking your credit history when you apply for a loan may generate a hard inquiry that can affect your score.

It is therefore sensible to check your own report after repaying a loan, particularly if you previously had a negative listing or want to confirm that the lender has submitted the correct information, without the fear that doing so will make your credit position worse.

Frequently asked questions about CRB updates after repayment

How many days does CRB take to update after loan repayment in Kenya?

Creditinfo Kenya says a lender may take up to three working days to report a cleared loan, followed by approximately two to three working days for the bureau to update the record. Actual timelines depend on the institution’s reporting arrangements.

Can CRB update my status immediately after I repay a loan?

It is possible for information to be updated quickly, but the process depends on the lender confirming the payment and submitting the updated information. Not every institution operates on the same reporting schedule.

Who is responsible for updating my CRB status after repayment

The financial institution that supplied the credit information is responsible for updating the loan’s status and submitting the relevant information to the bureau. The CRB then processes the update.

What if my lender says I have cleared the loan but CRB still shows an outstanding balance?

Request confirmation that the lender has submitted the updated information. You can also ask for the submission’s batch number, check your credit report and lodge a dispute with the bureau if the information remains incorrect.

Do weekends and public holidays count when calculating CRB update timelines?

The processing timelines published by Creditinfo refer to working days. Weekends and public holidays can therefore affect when you should expect an update, particularly where the lender or bureau needs to process information on the next working day.

Will my CRB status become good immediately after repaying a defaulted loan?

Not necessarily. The outstanding balance should be updated to reflect the settlement, but historical negative information may remain for the applicable retention period. Your overall credit score may also take time to reflect changes in your credit information.

The bottom line is if you have repaid your loan in Kenya and your CRB status has not changed, give the reporting process some time, but do not wait indefinitely.

Creditinfo Kenya’s general guidance points to approximately five to six working days for the lender and bureau stages combined. However, the actual timeline can vary depending on the institution’s reporting arrangements. If your record remains unchanged, contact the lender, request confirmation that the update has been submitted and obtain your credit report to check what is being reported.
