How to Travel in Style and Comfort This Summer (Packing Guide Inside)

A young Black woman in a flowy summer outfit sits on the edge of her bed, calmly packing a suitcase. Around her are sandals, a straw hat, skincare bottles, and a folded sundress. Soft natural light filters through a nearby window, creating a cozy, airy atmosphere. The scene suggests relaxed travel preparation for a summer holiday.

Travel Season Is Here….. But Don’t Panic Pack Yet

Ah, December.

The month when everyone suddenly remembers (deservedly so) that they need a break but somehow forgets how to pack like a sane person.

Destinations are vast, from the coast, to the village, Naivasha or wherever else you have mind. One thing is clear though, that how you pack will determine how your trip treats you.

This isn’t the time for overstuffed suitcases or missing chargers. And it definitely is not the time to arrive at the airport in a hoodie and boots because you “didn’t think it would be that hot.”

So before you panic-pack five pairs of jeans and a leather jacket “just in case,” let’s get intentional about travel comfort, style and smart packing hacks. Most importantly, where do you get that perfect summer dress? Lest you forget, summer dresses have been all the rage for a while now.

What Kind of Traveller Are You? (Plus, What Not to Bring Unless You Want Trouble)

Before we get into packing lists and outfit inspo, let’s figure out what kind of traveller you really are:

  • The City Hopper – Lives for new cafes, takes mirror selfies in museum bathrooms and cannot book an accommodation if it does not have a rooftop (views manenos).
  • The Coastal Queen – Has her bikini packed before the ticket is even booked. This one does not consider it a vacation if there are no beaches involved.
  • The Family Hero – without her/him, everything goes haywire. They are the one that sets up the alarms and makes sure everyone is on time. Responsible for passports, snacks and everyone’s moods. No mean feat if we are being honest.
  • The Solo Viber – Just here to rest and rediscover peace (or themselves for that matter.) Will probably cry at sunset (hey, i have always cried at the sighting of a good sunset).

Whichever one you are, it is vital that you pack accordingly.

Let’s talk about what not to bring, especially if you’re hopping on the SGR. Because nothing drops your mood faster than being told to leave your expensive perfume at the checkpoint gate.

SGR Does Not Play

Here are just a few things you should not carry with you to the SGR. Unless of course, you want your travel day to turn into an impromptu donation drive:

  • Perfumes and body splashes – According to the SGR website, “CREAMS, LOTIONS, OILS, GELS AND AEROSOL SPRAYS E.G. BODY SPRAYS, HAIR SPRAYS SHAVING CREAM, SUNSCREEN” Should not exceed 500MLS
  • Spray deodorants – Stick or roll-on only, please.
  • Lighters and matchsticks – Obvious? You’d think. But here we are.
  • Liquor – Unless it’s well-hidden in your bloodstream (lol)

I remember my friends and I having to down a whole bottle of wine because one of my stubborn friends thought she could hide it under many layers of clothing. Trust me when I tell you the scanners will still see it.

So, if it sprays, explodes or smells too nice but is in a big bottle… maybe leave it at home.

Travel Comfort Essentials…Because Vibes Alone Won’t Save You

Travel sounds glamorous until you’re halfway through the journey with dry lips, a dying phone and someone’s toddler kicking your seat. That is the moment it hits you that Comfort is survival.

So, what exactly do you need?

Non-Negotiables:

  • Travel pillow – Unless you enjoy arriving with neck pains.
  • Light shawl or kikoi – For unpredictable ACs or – God forbid – a puking seating partner.
  • Reusable water bottle – Your skin will definitely thank you.
  • Lip balm & hand lotion – Because crusty isn’t a personality.
  • Power bank –This one cannot be emphasised enough because otherwise minus it, it’s just you and your thoughts….. and 3% battery.
  • Snacks – Dried fruit, groundnuts or whatever it is that makes you happy.
  • Wet wipes & tissue – For the mystery restroom situations you’ll inevitably face.
  • Offline entertainment – A downloaded playlist, ebook or podcast goes a long way. Always remember that trying to rely on WiFi it’s a trap you’ll rather not depend on.

Keep these in a small “grab bag” inside your carry-on. That way you’re not tearing your suitcase apart looking for lip balm.

Packing Smart. The 5-4-3-2-1 Rule

When it comes to packing, two categories bring with them their chaos.
We have the Overpackers who bring their entire closet “just in case,” and underthinkers who show up with just liquor and a beach hat…and absolutely no underwear.

If you are either of the two, you will need the golden 5-4-3-2-1 packing rule that is flexible and perfect for an African summer holiday.

The Formula:

  • 5 Tops – Breathable tees, crop tops or linen shirts. You are allowed (encouraged even) to mix basics with a couple of cute pieces.
  • 4 Bottoms – Think flowy skirts, shorts, wide-leg pants and that one pair of comfy jeans you always trust.
  • 3 Dresses – One for the ‘gram, one for comfort and one that could do both.
  • 2 Pairs of Shoes – Sandals/slides + sneakers is all you need. Unless of course you will be going clubbing later on and you are one of those people that cannot go clubbing minus heels.
  • 1 Sweater/Shawl – Mornings can be disrespectfully chilly, especially if you are sleeping by the beach front. Better to be safe than sorry.
  • Roll your clothes to save space and reduce wrinkles.
  • Put one full outfit in your carry-on in case your luggage decides to travel alone.

One time, I arrived at the airport dragging a suitcase with a broken wheel, carrying three handbags, AND still had the audacity to be late. For the love of travel and good decisions:

  • Leave for the airport EARLY.
  • Do a “mock pack” the night before.
  • Don’t try to out-style the weather.
  • Check your bag zippers before you’re in the parking lot.
  • And never, EVER assume they’ll “wait just five more minutes.”

Style Meets Comfort. What to Wear While Traveling (So You Look Cute and Can Still Breathe)

I remember the first time I travelled by air. I was in full make up and heels. I still laugh about it to this day. (sometimes, i just cringe) Just like me, many have perished on that battlefield.

Traveling is not the time to test drive that stiff corset top. It’s the time to be as comfortable as you could possibly be, especially if the flight is really long. Let us have a look at how to look good without suffering

For Flights & Long Train Rides:

  • Biker shorts or loose joggers.
  • Oversized T-shirt or hoodie – Stylish and nap-friendly.
  • Crossbody bag or mini backpack for hands-free greatness.
  • Slip-on sneakers or comfy Crocs for security checks and those who get swollen ankles.

For Road Trips:

  • Breathable linen pants or harem trousers
  • Tank top or cotton crop (Sun-ready.)
  • Sunglasses and an elastic headband (fashion meets practicality.)
  • Slides or sandals to allow the toes to breathe (haven’t you done enough to them all year).

For Coast Arrivals or Beach Days:

  • Wrap dress over bikini or bralette that is easy to change in and out of.
  • Light kimono or kikoi
  • Canvas tote bag that holds everything.

For Casual Dinners or Night Vibes:

  • Sundress – Effortless, flirty, doesn’t wrinkle.
  • Flat mules or simple sandals (you did not come to suffer on vacation with heels)
  • Statement earrings + a cute clutch

A good travel bag is everything. Look for something structured and lightweight, that you could carry confidently.

Summer Dresses, Bikinis & Comfortable Outfits

You do not need to overthink. Pieces that move with you, layer easily and work from morning brunch to coastal sunsets should be your biggest friend this season.

  • Vivo Woman – vivo is one of my favourite stores because of the good quality of all their outfits. I remember when I was a lover of bodycons and how obsessed I was with theirs. I promise you will not be disappointed.
  • Mr. Price – to be honest, mr price has a huge variety and their prices are very pocket friendly.
  • Woolworths – Timeless staples like wide-leg pants, relaxed dresses and good-quality sandals. Oh and how could i forget, if you do not have at least one or two bras from woolworths (or even corset) are you really a baby girl?
  • Forever trendy bikini wear, scandals, cover ups, sunglasses, summer hats – you name it. This happens to be my favourite one stop shop for everything summer.
  • Budget wear – the name speaks for itself, I think. Unique pieces at the best price you could ever think of.

Sandals, Slides & Easy Shoes

If you’re shopping online, order at least a week in advance to avoid last-minute delivery stress especially before long weekends or public holidays.

Travel Don’ts – Mistakes to Avoid

There are some common mistakes that might seem small at the moment, but which can easily disrupt your mood or schedule.

Here’s a quick reminder of what to avoid:

1. Don’t Pack “Just in Case” Items You’ve Never Worn

Stick to pieces you know you love that fit well and you can style more than one way.

2. Don’t Ignore SGR or Flight Regulations

As mentioned earlier, SGR doesn’t allow a certain quantity of perfumes, body splashes, aerosol deodorants or any spray canisters. For those flying, check baggage limits and liquid restrictions in advance.

3. Don’t Be Late (They Will Leave Without You)

Arrive early and give yourself grace time for traffic. Also, check your gate twice.

4. Don’t Forget the Small Essentials

Power bank. Charger. ID. Sunscreen. Headphones. Yes, your comfort does depends on these tiny, easy-to-forget items.

5. Don’t Overdress or Overaccessorize on Travel Days

Save the statement pieces for your destination. Keep travel outfits simple and layer-friendly.

6. Don’t Wear New Shoes Without Testing Them First

Otherwise, you will understand why they are called Blisters.

7. Don’t Assume You’ll Have Reliable Wi-Fi or Charging Ports

Download playlists, maps, booking info and movies in advance. And always bring a fully charged power bank if it is available.

Travel Light, Travel Fully

Let comfort lead by choosing outfits that feel like skin and not armor. Make time for slow mornings and let the sun hit your skin without apology. Loosen up a bit and remember the year that you have had. Truly, you deserve a little pampering and relaxation. Read something just for pleasure. But above all. Remember to Laugh louder and sleep deeply.

You don’t need the perfect itinerary or the fanciest hotel. Just be kind to your body and give your mind permission to soften.
