How to Have a Sunday That Actually Feels Like Sunday

Samsung - A new way to enjoy your home

Sunday should never be turned into another productivity contest, even though thats how most people do their Sunday’s. They wake up early, clean the entire house and meal prep for the week. Some even exercise, plan finances and answer emails.

By Sunday evening, you are exhausted and wondering where your weekend went. But, does Sunday need to be that complicated? Sometimes, the best Sunday is simply one that gives you enough room to breathe before Monday arrives.

Let yourself sleep a little longer

Unless you have somewhere you absolutely need to be, Sunday is a perfectly reasonable day to sleep without an alarm screaming at you. Trust your body, it probably knows what it is doing.

There is no prize for being awake at 5am on a Sunday.

Do one small bit of tidying

You do not need to deep clean the house.

Pick one thing, maybe clear the kitchen counter or fold the clothes on the chair that has quietly become a second wardrobe. Take out the rubbish.

One small job can make the whole house feel different without stealing your entire afternoon.

Eat something you actually enjoy

Sunday food has its own personality. What’s that meal you’ve been craving and meaning to make but never come around to?

Maybe it is nyama choma or even pancakes, eggs and tea. But also, Sunday should be a day of choices and freedom, so if you are perfectly happy ordering something and refusing to wash a single plate, then do it.

The point is to enjoy your meal rather than treating food as another task to get through.

Go outside

Take a walk. Sit outside with your tea. Go to the park. Visit a friend or take the children out for ice cream. Sit somewhere with a little sunshine and watch the world move.

A change of scenery can do more for your mood than another hour scrolling through your phone.

Check Monday, but do not invite Monday in too early

It is useful to know what the coming week looks like.

Check your calendar and think about what needs to be done first.

Just that – nothing more.

You do not need to mentally live through every meeting, deadline and awkward conversation before Sunday is even over.

My mantra is usually to try and not worry about things i have no control over. After all, Monday will arrive whether you worry about it on Sunday or not.

Talk to someone

When was the last time you called your mother over nothing in particular, and when did you last have a proper conversation with your children?

Not every conversation needs to have a purpose. Sometimes it is enough to ask, “How are you?” and actually stay around for the answer.

Leave some time for absolutely nothing

This might be the most important one.

Sit on the sofa and Watch a movie. Read a few pages, listen to music. Stare out of the window or take an afternoon nap.

Do nothing without feeling guilty about it.

We have become very good at filling every available minute. Sunday can be a reminder that rest is also something we are allowed to do.

Let Sunday be Sunday

You do not have to transform your life every weekend, a perfect morning routine, a spotless house or a colour coded plan for the week.

Sometimes a good Sunday is simply good food, clean sheets, a little sunshine, a conversation with someone you love and enough quiet to hear yourself think.

And perhaps that is the point. The weekend does not always need to make you more productive – sometimes it just needs to give you a little bit of yourself back.
