How to Treat a Hangover: Survival Tips for the Day After

Feeling rough after last night’s celebration? Discover practical tips to treat a hangover and get your energy back fast this festive season.

The keyword here being fast, because really, who wants to waste time lamenting about a splitting headache when you could be out there making memories? It happens to the best of us. One too many festive drinks, a few extra glasses of wine (kwanza wine can be the devil when you over do it), or that celebratory champagne toast that went a little overboard. Or, it could simply be one of those nights where you declare loudly and proudly that liwalo na liwe. The morning after can be rough, especially for the, err, millennials. Headache, fatigue, nausea and a desperate longing for your bed. And then when you finally get to that bed, the world starts spinning in a way that leaves you thinking than surely even death must be better than that feeling….hehe. But don’t worry, your hangover is temporary, and there are plenty of ways to get back on track. Here’s how to survive the day after the festivities.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Alcohol dehydrates your body, so the first step is to replenish lost fluids. Always remember when drinking that water is your best friend. Interchange your alcohol with water. If plain water feels too boring, try coconut water or an electrolyte drink to restore essential minerals. Avoid the old “hair of the dog” trick as it may give temporary relief but delays your recovery.

2. Eat Something Nutritious

A nourishing meal helps your body recover. Toast, eggs, or bananas are all easy on the stomach. But before we even get to the after, make sure you lay a proper foundation before going on to drink. During the hangover, however, light soups or smoothies will replenish vitamins and minerals without making nausea worse. Try to avoid heavy or greasy foods first thing because they often do more harm than good.

3. Get Some Rest

Sleep is a natural hangover healer. If possible, allow yourself some extra sleep time. Even a short nap can do wonders for your mood and energy, and we need lots of that during this festival period.

4. Relieve Symptoms

  • Headache & muscle aches: Over the counter painkillers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help, but avoid overuse if your liver is sensitive.
  • Nausea: Ginger tea, peppermint tea or simple crackers can soothe your stomach.
  • Cold compress: Placing a cool cloth on your forehead can help ease pounding headaches.

5. Gentle Activity

While you might not feel up to intense exercise, a short walk or some light stretching can improve circulation and boost your energy. Listen to your body and keep it easy until you feel fully recovered.

6. Prevent Future Hangovers

Learn from experience:

  • Drink water between alcoholic beverages.
  • Eat before you drink.
  • Pace yourself and know your limits.

Your hangover can tell a story about your festive celebration style (it is okay, we do not judge here, truly) but let’s keep that between you and your water bottle! Hangovers are temporary, but the festive fun doesn’t have to be. Hydrate, rest, eat well, and take it easy and you’ll be back to enjoying the holiday season in no time.

Merry Christmas! Incase I forgot to mention it…
