Kenya Cane Supports Widows Led Poultry Project in Voi

Nairobi, Kenya – 20 January 2026

Kenya Cane, The True Kenyan Spirit, has reaffirmed its commitment to grassroots empowerment by handing over a fully constructed chicken coop and 100 chickens to the Suvirio Women’s Self-Help Group in Voi. The widows led collective has been working steadily to build sustainable livelihoods in the face of persistent socio economic and climate challenges in Kenya’s Coastal region.

Founded in 2013, the Suvirio Women’s Self Help Group brings together widows from Mwatete, Taita, who have united around shared resilience and collective progress. What began as cassava farming and small scale value addition has since evolved into poultry farming, a more stable and scalable venture that now provides consistent income through the sale of eggs and chickens.

Beyond income generation, the group’s impact has extended into housing and education. Through pooled resources and partnerships, members have collectively constructed 18 houses for the most vulnerable women in the group, restoring dignity and long term stability for their families. Their table banking model has also enabled members to educate their children, with several progressing to university and formal employment.

Kenya Cane’s support is expected to significantly increase poultry production, strengthening household incomes and accelerating the group’s long term goals, which include expanding housing initiatives and acquiring an egg hatching machine to sustain growth.

Speaking during the handover, Kenya Cane Brand Manager Victor Adada underscored the importance of centring real Kenyan stories in brand engagement.

“The True Kenyan Spirit is found in communities like Suvirio – women who choose resilience, unity and self determination despite the odds. Progressive brand storytelling must go beyond visibility; it should reflect values, purpose and real impact. Supporting initiatives like this allows us to amplify authentic Kenyan stories and contribute to sustainable change at the grassroots,” said Adada.

Welcoming the partnership, Suvirio Women’s Self Help Group Chairlady Catherine Mwazighe described the initiative as a turning point for the group’s future.

“This support represents growth, dignity and hope for our members. Poultry farming has helped us provide for our families more consistently, and the additional chickens and infrastructure will allow us to expand and become more sustainable. We are grateful to Kenya Cane for believing in what we are building – as women and as a community,” she said.
